DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

NEW ORGANISATION. Arising out of the recent change of control of tho medical treatment of fiick an<l wounded soldiws from the Public Health to the Defence Department, Dr. 'J'. H. A. Valintinc, head of the former Department, has been transferred to tho Defence Department, and his appointments in the Public Health Department as Insi)ector-General of Hospitals and Chief Health Officer have been conferred on Dr. J. P. Frengley, who will hold the offices during the indefinite leave which has been granted to Dr. Valintine. Referring to this, change, the Minister of Public .Health (the Hon. 6. W. Russell) stated last night that it was proposed to reorganise the Department oil modern lines, the intention being to separate the purely medical or professional work on the 0110 hand from the lay section on the other hand. This principle would obtain not only at the head office. but also as far as possible in connection with the district health officers at the four centres., The medical officers would as far as possible confine their attention to tho profes-' sioual side <>f the work, and the chief sanitary inspector in each case would bo given a larger measure of responsibility in regard to tho non-profes-sional work.
