MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE Aj\ t D BY-LAW CASES. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court held yesterday, and dealt with the police and by-law cases. A plea of guilty was entered by Septimus Williams, who appeared in uniform, to a charge of theft at Drummond, Southland, of a silver watchchain and sovereign-caso containing £4 Is., the property of Roland Walter Nelson. He was ordered to make restitution of the iStolen money, in default one month's imprisonment, and was ordered to be handed over to tho military authorities.
John William Coyle, a letter-carrier, for 1 whom Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared, pleaded guilty - to being found on licensed premises, and also to giving a false name and address. Sir. Jackson explained that the defendant got hopelessly drunk on St. Patrick's 'Day and could not rememb'er a single incident. The Magistrate said that the man having given way to drink, was of no use to himself or the public, and he thought that a prohibition order should be issued. The defendant agreed to this, and the order was made, to apply to the whole of the Dominion and to be effective for twelve months.
Samuel Crossley was charged with keeping a houso of ill-fame at 45 Frederick Street. Niels Mannonan, for whom Mr. J. ' Scott appeared, was charged with assisting in the management of a house of ill-fame; Joan Allieson represented _by Mr. P. W. Jackson, was similarly charged; and Nellie Prentice' 'ind Wang Tuck were also charged with assisting in the management of the house; and Thomas Counelly was charged with residing in a house of ill-fame. Lengthy evidence was given by a number of police officers, also by one of the defendants, Nellie 'Prentice, who admitted being guilty of immorality in the house, and alleged that tho money she obtained was handed over to Crossley at his request. The Magistrate held that there was no case against Mannonan, and dismissed the charge against him. Samuel Crossley, Thomas Connolly, ond WaDg Tuck were each sentenced to twolvo months'' imprisonment, and thc ; two women, Nellie Prentice and Jean Anderson, wero committed to the Salvation Army Homo.
BY-LAW OASES. For allowing stock to wander. George Robertson, James Thomas Yates, M. Sarcich, John F. Mills, and Daniel Wildermottwere each lined 10s. and costs; Edward Thomas Wills was lined 20s. and costs, and V. Shannon was fined £3 and' costs. For having unregistered dogs in their possession, John Watt and Thomas William Footo were each fined 10s. and costs 17s. 6d. Victor Baj/tarsby, Benjamin Gardner, and Theodore Pearson, convicted of riding motor-cycles on the Hutt Road cycle track, wero each fined 40s. and costs. Davison Alice Wilmott, for driving a motor-oar round a comer on the wrong side, was fined 10s. and costs; Stanley llurgoss and Harry Htil ! , similarly charged, wero each fined 40s. and costs. Andrew Doig, of Wanganui. for driving oil the wrong side ot the street, was fined 40s. with costs, and for failing to stop his car when requested to do so he was convicted and discharged.
Alick Aitkeu, for failing to stop his car when called upon to (to so, was convicted and discharged, and for a similar offence George Howard was fined 40s. with costs. ''
For failing to notify change of adVlress, a reservist named Frank Ernest Thomson was fined 10s. and costs.
