ONSLOW BOROUGH

MEETING OP THE COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting of Hie Onslow Borough Council was held on Wednesday. The Mayor (Mr. J'. M. Dale) presided, and thero were present Councillors W. Appleton, E. A. Budd, E. Hobbs, P. F. Hodgson, A. B. Tonp, E. G. Tuaker, C. Bovden, and A. W. Palmer. The Town Clerk was authorised to sue for all outstanding rates. Tho Manawatu County Council wrote asking for the support of the Onalow Borough Council for a resolution with respect to damage lo roads caused by motor-cars goine; to the races, which was due to the cutting down of tlie number of race trains. Councillor Appleton moved that the council support the resolution. To this an amendment was moved by Councillor Budd that it be suggested to the ManaViitu Council that the Minister be approached with respect to curtailing racing as much on possible. The mover contended that racing provided excitement without recreation, and at this time it was desirable that racing should bo abolished. Ho held that whether the Government increased the number of trains or not motor-cars in numbers would still run to the races. It was generally admitted that the motor-cars cut up the roads, nnd it was contended that the cars should be taxed. Councillor Budd's amendment was carried. „ , , Tho Makara County Council wrote askinr for support for a resolution having for its object (he taxation of motor vehicles, euch tax to be applied towards the maintenance of the roads. Councillor Appleton moved that the Makara County Council be informed that Onslow Borough Council cannot support the resolution. This was seconded by Councillor Hodgson. . In the discussion which followed it was stated that in Taranaki the toll-gate provided a means to this end, and the rZh in be district were exec= lent for motorin" It was admitted that the ,problem" was a very difficult one, and required a good deal of consideration if motorists were not to be unfairly laxed.
