The Union Company will to-day ills palf.li the Kamona for Lyttelton and Dunedin at noon, and the kowhai for New Plymouth and Grcynmutli. Both venecla will tako general cargo. Instead of coming to Wellington from Nelson Messrs. G. T. null and Co. advise that the Putifci yesterday sailed from that- port direct for Lyttelton and DunMessrs Oathie, Dempster and Co. advise that the Wootton will arrive at Wellington this evening with produce from Lyttelton. and to-inorro-v. at n p.m.. will sail ' for Lyttelton with general cargo.
Heavy rain 'fell at Auckland yesterday, delaying shipping generally. Both the Monowai and Mapourika aro to sail to-day, tho Monowai arriving at Wellington on Saturday. Tho collier Kini was din last night fully radon with coal and timber from Westport. A special trip to Wellington with coal from the Coast is being made by the ffestport Coal Oo.'s Oanopiw, which arrived early last night. She has a full load to discharge for tho company and should Bail to-morrow night or on Saturday for Westport. Mariners are notified that the black buoy marking Tlikntn Heck. Tofcoina.ro Bay. was replaced on Tuesday, after havintr been washed away early laßt week. It la probable that the Wairau will come off tho slip to-day and sail direct for Blenheim. Tho -Ucxander will arrive from IjyttoHon on Sunday, and sail for Nelson and West Coast ports on Monday, at 5 p.m. Early this morning the Ugolnita should arrive from (Jreymonth to discharge a full, load of coal into the hulks. She is to sail on Saturday For the Coast. In consequence of the recent fires in 111" Wnnianui district a large demand has arisen for produce and grass seed In that part of th» North Island. Those supplies are urgently needed, and eovoral coastal Steamers are now engaged in carrying such foods to Wnnganui (*ays the Dunedin "Star"*. Owing to this the steamer Brooze. which was originally fixed to load general cargo at. Dunedin for northern ports, will omit the call at Wellington
The Maori haH been a conplo of hours' late in reaohinn Lyttelton each day lately (says the "Sim"), and it lias been freely reported that the reason is bad coal.' In conversation with a reporter an official of the I'nion Company stated emphatically that good ooal was used, but it did not suit tho boilers of the Maori. The Maori usually burns a mixture of Grcymouth coal and stcamß much better on thai coal than any other.- "It is a P"ouliaritv with some 6hip»." said the official, "that they will only hum one coal, and if other coal is nsed the. cons"mience is that less steam is obtained, thereby reducing tho speed." A fow months ago. when hundreds of tons ot cml had to be taken mjl the bunko's of a ffiip in 'Wellington which *vas on fire, no tfhtn neeptfne the Monowfll could get the steaming power out of that coal, thus nlonrlv nvnvint that a ,->hln is something l'V a Miv that ein nnlv be fed en one food.
