HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held yesterday. Mr. J. AVhiteman presided, and thoro were present Councillors AY. J. Howell, F. G. Cooper, M.-AV. AVelch, AY. Galloway and G. Cavanagli. It was resolved on the motion of Councillor Howell that all ratepayers who owe more than one year's rates be forthwith sued for the amounts dues The Inspector of AVorke (Mr. J. AY. Cudby) reported that ;v considerable amount of damage had been done by tho recent gales. The Parade at Paokakariki was totally swepb away on March 19, and the Surf Club's building was completely wrecked. The road north of the entrance to the beach had been more or less damaged for ita whole length. Every effort had been made by the council's employees/assisted by witting residents, to save tho buildings, but without success. The restoration of the road to something like order was now well in hand. The road along the ■ beach at Plinimcrton Extension had also been damaged a good deal by erosion, but though at one point traffic was held up for a' time, the matter was promptly attended to. A stone and concrete wall at the southern end of the Day's Bay Road had also been partially wrecked. The heavy rain which fell on Sunday last was responsible for damage to the Horokiwi Bridge, the southern pier of .which was undermined and let the end of the bridge down about three feet. The bridge is at present closed to all traffic, aiid repairs are being pushed forward. The approaches to several other bridges in the county had also been washed out.
