DALMATIANS' SERVICES TO BE UTILISED
SOLDIERS RATES OF PAY. It was etated yesterday by the Min* ister of Defence in reply to a reporter that the Government has decided to utilise the services of the Dalmatians in the Auckland district on various public works, including road, railway, and drainage operations, and that Mr. J. Cullen, tho, Commissioner, who was appointed to compile a register of the men, has received authority to make arrangements with "the officials of the Public Works and Lands Departments for putting the scheme into operation. In cases in which-men are already profitably employed they will not be removed from their occupations. The) Minister stated that the Echeme probably will be initiated in the Nortlii Auckland district, but that some men, preferably the single men, may bei placed on works in other parts of tho Dominion. It is not possible at present, said the Minister, to say. how' many men will be employed. The greater part of the work of registration lias been carried out, and it will be completed as soon an possible. As to remuneration tlip Minister slated that the men would receive soldiers' 1 rates of pay with an allowance for food and clothing:
