NOTES AND COMMENTS
• [By Giencoe.] Entries for the Hawke'e Bay Jockey Olub's Autumn Mooting closo on Friday next. . • J H. Gray, who has been having a lot of success in the eaddlo lately, did not rido a winner at Avondale. At Awapuni next week the first event is timed to start at 11.30 a.m. Hymeona, winner of the Flying Handicap at Avondalo on Saturday, is by Hyuiettuß from Eona, a Woloomo Stakes winner. Like her dam, Hymeona can gallop very fast J. W. Scott is to receive a couplo of additions to his team at Trentham. They Hurdles winner, and a full-brother to Expect. Both horses were purchased by Mr. J.' Fonwick last week. Passing through Palmereton North yesterday the writer was informed that the Awapuni race track has just been rolled with a heavy roller, and there is e.vory chanco of the going being perfect for next week's meeting. Mr. T. H. Lowry has arrived baok in New Zealand, and will reach Hastings this evening. Arrangements are boing made to enlarge the totalisator house at Awapuni k> aooommodato tho extra crowd expected at next week's meeting. | Mr. Ebb Simpson, owner of Mies do Tal, bought a two-year-old gelding by Advance from. Miss Leighton at the Feilding enlce i last week. Tho youngster will bo trained j by J. Ayres. j The Morris Bros., of Marton, journeyed north for the Avondale Meeting, and each succeeded in ridiug a winner. B. Morris scored on Persian Prince, and the younger brother was successful on Hymeona Seldom if ever has a- race attracted bo much attention in tho Dominion as has the coming Awapuui Gold Oup. Biplano is due to arrive from tho south at the end of the week, and bofore that time Desort Gold will, it is hoped, bo safely quartered in her boi at Woodville. Accommodation has been booked for both she and Estland at Awapuni, so evidently it is intended to bring them froa Woodvillo before tho day of the races. J. O'Shea will ride Desert Gold, B. Deelcy will bo on Biplane, and C. Emerson on Estlftnd. The autumn meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club will take place on Thursday and Friday of this week. The National Steeplechase winner Master Strowan is again a regular worker at Foxtou. At the present time he is much above himself, but it is Mr. Easton's intention to irive him a iace or two on the flat before the jumping Eoason commences. In-previoua years the Manawatu Racing Club has held some very successful fixtures, but it is safo to predict that next weok's gathering will colipse all prevjpus reoords. There is not a horse-boy to lie. had ,at any of the stables, while tho hotels aro also fully booked. The sale is reported of the locally-owned Street Singer, who has been sold to raco amongst the galloways in Sydney. Desort Gold, who has returned to New Zealand from Australia, had an excellent trip across, and has been accepted with in North next week. The others left in tho race ore Biplane, Eslland, Meuelaus, Biaogne, Impediment, and Koesian. Marconi ha 3 gone sore, and is to bo rested. The fastest time registered for the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie is credited to Ohortle, who scored two yea.™ ago in lmin. ii 'I-Sboc, with 9st. 71b. in the saddle. Nonotto, who in 1902 carried 9st. 111b. to victory ifl the only horse thai, has succeeded with a greater weight than Chortle's. Nonette took lmin. 42scc. to cover tho mile. Advance won the raco in 1900, carrying 9st. 61b., and his time also 'was lmin. 42eeo. This year Parisian Diamond did the journey with 7st. 111b., on a holding course, without bein E extended, in lmin. 40sec. Mr Q D. Bcatson, owner of Parisian Diamond, bought the gelding on a sheeprun from Mr. W. G. Stead, who bred him. The price was £100. Gazique, who wou the Avondale. Handicap on Saturday, has run consistently since his appearance at Glsborne in February. In four races in his own province he scored two firsts, a second, and a Uiird He ran second to Parisian Diamond in tho Easter Handicap on the openSe day at Ellerelie. won on the second lav of Ike meeting, and won again on Saturday. He h" boon entered at liana''car'lysian, who has' been spelled, is in work again at Gicborne. Ho may bo tried over hurdles this winter. Stipendiary stewards at Oaulfiold' suspended a jockey for' "having been caught hupping and thrown the raco away. To
be caught napping has been the fate of somo of the best horsemen. Tho rider in this caso was 0. Oail, who hart tho mount on Fleet Lady, a heavily-backed runner in tho Gordon Steeplechase. Inking a look round when half-way up the straight, and not Eeeing any danger from his opponents. Call allowed his mount to Blow up, -with the result that he was beaten by a neck by fiedrick, who finished gamely under punishment. Cail took no heed of the yell of the spectators to go on beforo Sedrick caught him, and ho got a great shoclt when the gelding, well ridden by A. Day, caught him a, few lengths from the post. 'kilboy has arrived back in New Zealand from Australia. Warmth, who showed very moderato form in Taranaki at the beginning o£ the year, but improved gradually and eventually struck winning form at Bulls, was a™ain in the prize-money at Feuding. King Ohiara appeared to be sore at Feilding. He ran a good second in the concluding event of 'the meeting, but first honours went to Yolo, for whom the race looked to be a, present. One of the chief attractions at the recent Gosford Meeting, Now South Wales, was tho appearance of the crack two-year-old, Sweet Lady, in the Flying Handicap. The mere fact of Dempscy going from Melbourne to ride her was Quite sufficient to attraot, attention to her prospects, and she was in strong request from the opening of betting. Sweot Lady Jumped off flret, and eventually won as she liked in fast time. Vaeoular is shaping well in his fencing exercises at Riccarton, mid is expected to run prominently in coming winter events. The trotters Vice-Admiral, Leo Bell, Harold Devon, and Lord Eose have been sent, north to compete at the Auckland and Otahutu Meetings. \ Several inaccuracies crept into the telegraphed list of times sent through for, the Waimato Plains Trotting Olubs Meeting on Easter Monday. George Aokwood wae credited with trotting a milo and a half, when he won the Stratford Handicap in 3min. 1 4-ssec. whereas his time was actually 3min. 51 Msec, while Waiteranui, in the FJtham Handicap, was reported to have taken 2min. 23 2-saec. to raver the mile, instead of 2m n. 18 Msec. When so much attaches to times W handicapping trotting races, the slightest error is likely to have very damaging.effect. In tho lastmamed event the three placed horses improved on the best '™ 6 have registered in Auckland the track getting fastor as the day advanced. Desert Gold's racing record is 45 starts and never out of a place. She has secured 33 firsts, 8 seconds, and 4 thirds.
