» The Secretary of the General Post Office has been advised that legal time will be advanced by one hour,in Holland from April ] to October 1, in Hungary from April 1 to Soptembor 29. and in Bosnia-Herzegovina from April 15 to September 16. The .notification of March 2G in regard to legal time'in Austria has been emended a?, regards the dates, which are now notified to be April 15 to September 16. "It was to bo regrotted that shopkeepers encouraged the- wives of working men, and women who were not tho wives of working men, to run up bills without tho knowledge of their husbands, and milch in excess of their husband's earnings." A remark by Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, after hearing evidence in a maintenance case. The Easter vacation having concluded, the State schools of tho AVolliiifrton Education District will reopen this morning. Shortly before noon yesterday the fire brigade was called to Bouth's Buildings, Featherston Street. Tho fire was in a basement occupied by Mr. Harold Brown, wine and general merchant. Tho gas sold to consumers in Hie Lower Hutt Borough during the year ended February 28 last was 'or domestic purposes 11,446,600 ft., realising £3816 10s., and for mwn 1,023,700fi."i realising £298 Us. vd. Street lighting required 878,000 ft., worth £201 4s. 2d. The gross profit mado by the council during tho year was £1581 Bs. sd. The sales of gas to consumers for the year shows an increase of 1,090,300 ft. over the previous yoar, boing equal to 9:68 per cent.

As n result of the visit of the E-ngin-eer-iu-Chicf of the i'ublii; Works Department to the district it lias been decided to deviate- the route of the East Coast railway lino beyond Ngatapa. The deviation, which will avoid some bud country above the Mangatoetoe, will cross the saddle on the Wharekopao lload, and will run up a small valley to tho main divide. The. summit will bo approached by a tunnel over a milo and a quarter in length) and the- • original route will be joined up above, the head of the Te Aroha Stream. Tho deviation, which is tho work off the district engineer., Mr. C. B. Armstrong, now being approved, tho work of pegging out the line can be proceeded with. The monthly meeting of tho Wellington School Committees' Association was hold at the Education Board's room last evening, Mr. A. G. AVallaeo presiding. Only routine, business was dealt with and tho association was then addressed by Mr. William Foster, headmaster, of Clyde Quay School, on the co-operation of school committees and school staffs, and at the conclusion of tlio address a number of questions were answered to the satisfaction of tho association. Mr. Foster was accorded a heartv vote of thanks.

During the year ended March 31, 1918, sixty building permits wore issued by the Lower Hutt Borough Council, fifteen being for new houses and the others for alterations and additions. The value of tho work is estimated at £14,481, and the fees totalled £14 los.
The City Corporation official authorities were pleased at the entire absence of any trouble during the furious rain-storm of the week-end. The downfall was very heavy, and being accompanied by a 70-rai)e,-an-]]our gale, it was anticipated that eonie of the storm-wnter culverts in outlying districts would he severely tested. Under a new arrangement an- overseer. has been appointed to take charge of the upland district between Brooklyn to tho south and AYadestown to the north, whose duties include keeping «the sumps clear in those places where storm waters have a habit of accumulating and causing mischief. The weekend storm found everything in excellent order, and the big rush of water found clear channels into the drains at Kelburn, AVaclestown, and other danger points.
The chaplain of H.M.S. New Zealand has written as follows to the Wellington branch of tho Navy League:—"On behalf of the boys of the ship I thank the Navy League at AVellington for its very generous gift received. You can aseuredly know that your gift will give tremendous pleasure, and will be very much appreciated. Personally I can say that 1 am very glad to have any opportunity to do anything for . the boys that will tend to relieve the monotony of their lives, for there is no getting away from the fact that life on board a fighting ship in war time is, for the men of the lower deck, an amazingly monotonous proceeding. We who see them and live with them are filled with admiration .for their almost unfailing cheerfulness under their abiiormnlconditions, and our only regret is that wo can do so little to alleviate the monotony. We are therefore all the morp grateful for an opportunity such as this to do something for them."
The balance-sheet of the Lower Hntt Borough Council was available for presentation at the meeting of the council Inst evening, and the Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) took occasion to congratulate tho staff on the speed with which the accounts were closed and tho balancesheet prepared. The financial position of the council was roported to oe very good, the gns account showing a substantial credit balance.
