"CATHOLICS FIRST"
. « Bathurst, Monday. The Rev. Bro. Alphonsus, of Orange, speaking at the annual reunion at the Patrician Brothers' Schoo', is reported to have made a remarkable statement. He said that-they had heard a good deal lately of nationality and Empire. Tt was disgusting to hear the remark that Australia had not done her share in the present war. Many men in Australian public life were seeking self-aggrandisement at the expense of our national reputation, which was to bo deplored. Some people wero of the opinion that they should put tho brapi re before Australia; but ho doubted the truth of such persons. When any country lost its national spirit that was tho beginning of the end for that country. They could learn a lesson from the dear tittle country of Ireland. "As Archbishop Vanghai. said," ho aMded, " 'we are Catholics first slid •Englishmen after that.' We can say that we are Catholics first and Australians after. There is a small word, 'Anzac,' that is threatening to undermine our nationality. Why not say Australians'? People in other countries don't know where these fa oops come from. I would like to see that word expunged from the newspapers. [ protest against that word."
