BRITAIN'S CALL FOR MEN
' NEW MAN-POWER BILL . CONSCRIPTION AND THE IRISH London, April 5. Mr. Lloyd George will introduce. a now Man-Power Bill on Tuesday without giving the usual day's'notice. It is anticipated that the Bill will be road the third time before the weekend. It does not extend conscription to Ireland. The question of conscription in lieland is postponed till the report of the convention is published. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in a letter to the "Freeman's Journal," urges Ireland to rouso herself to a sense of duty, or Irishmen will be ashamed of their blood. "Ireland," he says, "is as fat as butter, and wrangles over the parish pump. If peaco came now, whero would Ireland find a friend?"— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. FORECAST OF THE MEASURE. (Rec. April 7, 5.5 p.m.) London, April 6. The Man-Power Bill will have even ' wider scope than has been generally ' supposed. It is understood that it ' will fix the new age limit at fifty, and will scrap.the tribunal system except for tho postponement of the date of calling to tho colours, withdraw the exemptions of men in tho higher medjcal categories, extend tho service of acts by clergy for non-combatant work, clear out eligiblcs from all the luxury trades, provido now tests for medical grading, and cnablo the authorities to send youths abroad before they reach nineteen for service behind tho lines. The Bill does not contemplate industrial conscription.. Tho greatest surprise in the measure . consists in tho laying down of _ the principle that Irishmen will 'be liable for service. Tho Bill will probably ask Parliament for much wider power than it is immediately intended to enforce. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. AUSTRALIA'S SHARE GOVERNOR-GENERAL CONVENES A CONFERENCE. (Rec. April : 7, 5.5 p.m.) Melbourne, April 6. The Governor-General has convened a conference for Friday to consider 'the Imperial Government's appeal for reh> forcements, and endeavour to reach somo unanimity in favour of a common policy— Press Assn.
