9 POLICE AND BY-LAW OASES. At tho Magistrate's Court yesterday Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided, and dealt with the police and by-law cases. There were six first offenders for insobriety, three of whom were each fined 20 s., in default 48 hours' imprisonment, and the other three 10s. each, with the alternative of 24 hours' imprisonment. Johau Kister, who failed to appear, was charged with being found on licensed premises after closing hours. He was seen coming out of the Grcsham Hotel about' 8.20 p.m. with an empty bottle in his pocket, and when arrested lie said to tho constable, "Don't make it too hot for mc." He was fined 40s. and ( costs 75., in default 14 days' imprisonment. GUTTING OFF THE CORNER. ■Drivers of vehicles, motor-cars, and motor-cycles have been in the habit of driving round Ellice Street into Dufferin Street on tho wrong side to cut off the cornor, and this practice, it itas alleged, had become dangerous. The police recently kept watch, and a large batch of offenders appeared in court yesterday and were penalised as follow: Leslie Baldwin, George Collins, Charles Grimmett, Ezra Grimmett, Frank Mayow, Ronald Howard T'igely, Henry I'ratley, Thomas Williams, R Wills, and Frank Williams, each fined 10s. and costs 17s. 6d., in default seven days' imprisonment. MOTORISTS FINED. Dr. Cahill, for failing to stop his car when requested to 'do so by tho policeman on point duty at the intersection of Manners and Willis Streets, was fined 40s. and costs 325. 6d.; Frank Clifford, for exceeding the speed limit when rounding a corner, waß fined 10s. and costs 28?.; Leonard Dregcr, for a- similar offence, was fined 40s. and costs 28s. Alfred Smith Molyneux, for riding his motor-cycla past a stationary tramear while passengers were, getting on and off the car, was fined 20s. and costs 17s. Gd. UNREGISTERED DOGS. For having unregistered dogs in their possession, Edward Thomas Cutler, Edward M. Blake, Lloyd Fletcher, and Harold K. Hassell were eacli fined ss. and costs 17s. 6d., and Samuel O. Mason and Mrs. Agnes Miller were each fined 10s. and 17s. 6d. costs. OTHER CASES. Archibald West, for hawking without a license, was fined 10s. and ,17s. Od. costs, and Charles Edward Matin for a similar offence received a similar penalty: James Hassett, a hawker, was fined 10s. and 7s. costs for failing to move liis barrow when ordered to do so by the police. It was stated by. Inspector Doyle, of the City Corporation, that tli© man had since been refused a license because tho police report was adverse. Tho Inspector himself "gave the man a good character, and said he gave less trouble than any other of the hawkers. A fine of 10s. with costs 17s. 6d. was imposed on William Rister for allowing stock to wander.
