NEW ZEALAND ON A WAR BASIS
Sir,—ln your leading article of April 8 you say that: : "The Government should . . . stimulate it (the population of New Zealand) to undertake the maximutii war "effort which our resources and opportunities will permit." To make this effort it seems to me that the whole of the business and wotlc of the Dominion should ■ now be carried out on a war basis; and with this end in view the population ■ might be divided into groups, such as praressional, commercial, farmers, trade, labour, etc.; and so far as possible existing organisations could be utilised to organise the business and work of each group. Chambers of commerce, in combination with leading business men, ■ might deal with commercial interests, the professional societies could each elect a committee for the Dominion to allocate work and positions to professional men, similarly with trades and labour; farming interests are partially in the hands of the Efficiency Board committees, y/hose work could be • expanded; the idea being to utilise existing organisations, and to ensuro that the organising and directing in each group may be carried out by the leading experts of that group. The whole business and work of the Dominion -being co-ordin-ated_ and dove-tailed together by the Efficiency Board.—l am, etc., N.Z.C.E.
