WHITE PINE TIMBER
IMPORTANT INVESTIGATION. There have been demands made by dairy interests recently to have the available supplies of white pine timber conserved for the dairy industry, white pine timber being the only one that is available in this country that is suitable ior the making of boxes and crates for the packing of butter and cheese. The Government referred the matter to the National Efficiency Board for inquiry and report, and yesterday the board met representatives of the various interests concerned—dairy produce people, sawmillers, box makers, and coopers, and freezing companies. The matter was discussed for the whole day in conference, and a committee of representatives of all these interests has been set up to go into the matter in more detail. The questions to be determined are as to whether it is advisable, by the prohibition of export or otherwise, to / conserve stocks of standing white pino timber, as to whether such steps as may be taken will be effective, and as to whether it is not possible to grow in this country other timbers which aro tasteless and odourless, and therefore suitable for the packing of dairy produce and tallow. On these points the board will in due course report to the Government.
