The Raotlhi Fire Sufferers, A Raetihi correspondent- writes:— "Now that tho big rush in the distribution of clothing is over, we have settied down to more steady business, and have timo to realise how good the public have- been in sending such a varied find useful lot of goods ifor men and women, boys and girls. The line lot of fifty casos of goods, as well ns a substantial contribution in cash from tho Y.W.C.Aij stand out as ono of the most valuable unacknowledged gifts received. Mrs. Pearson, president of the- Y.W.C.A., not only personally superintended the packing of the goods, but travelled with them to Raotihi, and whs most energetic in sorting out and distributing these,, and goods from other sources. • The local workers rcgrotted Mrs, Pearson's and Mrs. Houghton being called home owfng to their mother's serious illness. 'fhey were both missed, Mrs. Houghton having been one of the most useful helpers from the time of, and during, the fire,"
Miss Marjorio Shard, of Sydney, is visiting New Zealand, and is at present staying with ■ Mrs Harold Beauchamp, 01 "The Grange," AVadestown. Luko has returned from Auckland .considerably, benefited in health by tho rest. Sister Mary Shirley (Napier), who v/as for some time a masseuse at Hannier and recently retained from service abroad, left for Christchufch early in the week. •
News from England gives particulars of the marriage .of Miss Gladys Merton, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Georgo Merton, to Mr. Fell, formerly of Christ's College, unci iiow of the. Royal Flying Corps. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Cooper (Masterton) left yesterday on a month's, motor tour of the.North Island. On Easter Saturday the mnrriago took place at Knox Church, Christchurch, of Mr.' Johii Barr. only son of Mr. Robert Barr, Dumbarton (Scotland) to Miss Olive Gillmaii, daughter nf Mrs. Gillman (Christohurch). The bridegroom left. New Zealand with thr. Seventh Reinforcements, and returned m short time ago. A family gathering was held at the residence of Mr Giles Oh(inib'prla ; n, ''Westmca-th," Upper Plain. Mastertnn, on March 31, to celebrate his 80th birthday. Mr.' Clinmbcrlain lias roHidod on the Upper Plain continuously [or 03 years. Thft Wellington South Nursing Division met on Tws'lny evening to practise roller-bandaging. Good work was done under tho supervision of Mrs. Barltrop.
Miss On , , lady superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, who has resigned, leaves early this month for England, where alie is to be married upon arrival, states the Auckland "Star." The wedding 'took place, in the Epsom Methodist Church, Auckland, recently, of Misß Hazel Trembath, ,of Epsom, and Lieutenant J. R. Thorburn. of the Main Body, who bas returned on leave. The engagement is announced of Miss A. C. Murray, second Balighter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Murray (Levin) to Q.M. Sergeant F. N. Fletcher, 101., second son of ■Mγ. and Mrs. S. Fletcncr, Nottingham, England. The wedding took place in St. Michael's Churoh, Ohristchurch, on Tuesday afternoon, of Miss Ruby Alice Wrathall, daughter of Mrs. Wrathall, New Brighton, to Mr; Robert Marshall Ray, of Gore, a returned Anzac. The bride, who was given away by Mr. Gillanders (Christchurch), was attended by Miss Rene Wrathall and Miss' J. Fraser as bridesmaids. Private J. Ray, nephew of the bridegroom, was best man, and Private Roy Penlington (Christchurch) was groomsman. The Rev. Mr. Holland, of Kaiapoi, performed the ceremony; The wedding took place this week in St. Mark's Church, Epsom (Auckland), of Miss E. M. B. Hall, 8.A., daughter of Mr. T. Hall,' Remuera, to Mr. E. AV. Inder, LL.B., of Remuera. Miss Kathleen Hall was bridesmaid, and Mr. A. W. Delatnere was best man. Both bridegroom and best man are returned soldiers.
Miss Scully, supervisor of the Telephone Exchange Department, has bcon spending a few days in Napier.
The Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke) and Miss' Luke returned , to Wellington yesterday from a visit to the : north. During their three weeks away from Wellington . they stayed at ■' Palmerston North, Napier, Auckland, and Te Aroh.a, and on their return journey visited the Waitomo C&ves.
The death is announced from London of Mrs. A. J. Bond under distressing circumstances. She was married to'Lieut.\A. J. Bond (son of Mr. J. S. Bond, of Hamilton)) on December 10 last, at Hove, and, with her husband, went up to the metropolis. There she was taken ill ivith pneumonia, and, notwithstanding the best medical and nursing attention, bhe succumbed seven weeks after her marriage. The funeral took place on Tuesday,- January 29, in St. Philip's Church, Hove, and was conducted by the Rev. E. Cresswell Gee, who had officiated at the wedding. The chief mourners were the bereaved husband and his brother, Private Percy Bond/of the N.Z.E.F. The following; officers acted as bearers:— Major Hume, Captain P. M. Wilforcl Lieut. W. V. Quane, and Second-Lieu-tenants J. K. Maloney, D. C. Griffith, and R. P. Kay.
