During the past week there has been sitting in Christchurch the first Dominion conference of representatives of the ironmongery and hardware trades. The conference sat under the chairmanship of Mr. James M'Clellan, and the proceedings were not open to tho Press. "With respect to statements that have been in circulation hinting that one of the chief objects of tlio conference was the formation of some association somewhat in the nature of a combine (states the Christchurch "Press"), it is stated, on the aiithority of one of those acquainted, with the business transacted by tho conference that no such proposal was discussed. What has given rise to these statements is, probably, a suggestion thrown out by a guest at a social function held in connection with the conference, that in view of the shortage of shipping space and the consequent difficulty experienced in obtaining supplies, it would be worth while tho conference considering the question of those engaged in the ironmongery and hardware trades pooling their buying. This suggestion was not considered generally to be practicable. The matters discussed by the conference related principally to the tradn, and woro not of general public interest.
Suitable materials for girls' school dresses nro extremely hard to buy in theso days. Davis and Clater, Lambton Quay, have just landed a small shipment of plain navy Fr. cambric, fast colours, at 2s. 6d. a yard. Early application is necessary, tho stock fcoing very limited. -Advt,
