COACH AND MOTOR TRADES CONFERENCE
By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, ApriJ 2. The sixth annual convention'of the New Zealand Coach and Motor Vehicles Trades' Industrial Association of Emloyers concluded to-day. The following resolutions were carried:— "That this conferenec views with alarm the proposed apprentice law as suggested by the Trades and Labour Council. The effect of this Jaw if put on the Statute Book of this' Dominion would tend to discourage the development of our local industries and' make the employment of apprentices an impossibility." "That this conference recognises that the present system of training is inadequate, and affirms the principle that technical education should form part of every apprentice's training, and that if possible provision should be made in the lirst three years of his apprenticeship whereby the employer will allow facilities during ordinary working hours foi this purpose. Further, that the ap-' prentice should be under supervision of a board, consisting of representatives of the employers and employees, and that he should be compelled to submit to periodical examinations to determine his fitness." "That owing to the important part the Customs'tariff ■ plays jn our industry, this meeting heartily supports the proposals of the Industrial Association in urging the appointment by the Government of a tariff board." The election of officers resulted as under:—President, Mr. W. J. Boon (Christchurch); vice-presidents—North Island, Mr. C. Cooper (Pukekohc); South Island, Mr. J. 0.
