■ , ———-e —■ ——- ■ ■ ■ THE NGAIO CLUB. The fifth annual report of the. Ngaio ■ Chess Club shows that the can look back on a very , satisfactory year. Mve new -members 'replaced, the five who had left tlie district, and the number on the roll thus remains unchanged. The good work of the han-j dicapper (Mr. P. AY. Banks) brought about a close finish in the annnal tourney, which was won by F. J. Brooker, a former member of the Canterbury and Oa-maru Chess Clubs. The second prize- went to A. B Topp, and tho third to H. Prince, .who also annexed tlie brilliancy nrize and . the special trophy for making the best score in Class 11. Mr. Appleton secured' the trophy -for-the-second-best score in Class 11. Three inter-club matches we're played, a handsome- win- being scored • against . the Working Menls Club (by . ten games to four), while the "homo and home" with Wellington South yielded - a tie in August (six games each) and a loss in November (5 —7)._ The gear's programme finished with' a visit by Messrs. Barnes and Kelling, two New Zealand ex-champions, who took : 'the rounds alternately ■in • simultaneous ■ play against all-comers, several interesting games resulting. Tho marked improvement of the junior members was a. gratifying feature of the season.- -The balance-sheet shows that there is £3 4s. in hand, and only one liability, amounting to fifteen shillings. Tlie trophy fund account shows a credit balance of £1. : The report'and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted, at the recently- . held meeting., The'election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as fol-, lows:—President, Mr.' F. J. Brooker; hon. secretary, Mr. J. Alion, treasurer, Mr. H. Prince, (reelected) ; committee, Mo3srs. Brooker, Glasgow, Prince, Nicol, and Green. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded'to the retiring hon. secretary, Mr. A. S. Green. It was decided to chango the night of meeting to Mondays,: and to invite the Working Men's Club's team to play the annual match at Ngaio on a Monday in April.. WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB., This club's annual championship tourney (limited to the eight strongest players available) is rapidly approaching completion. Five 'of the seven rounds have been contested. Mr. Purchas (tho 1916 champion) has scored four -wins a-nd one loss, and Mr. G. P. Anderson (tho present champion) is close up with three v ins, one draw, and one loss.
