THIRTY. DAYS OUT FROM .AUCKLAND. A welcome .arrival on Saturday morning last at Dunedin was tho auxiliary Bcnooner May Howard. Tho schooner waß 3t) days on tho, trip from Auckland, during which she encountered the full forco of the storm round the east coast of the North Island. ' , , . . The May Howard left Auckland in fine weathor on March 1, and cleaned Itangitoto Channel early next morning. On March 3, -when oB Ouvier Island, it became evident that there was going to bo a big change in tho weather, ago was made at Tepaki Point. A strong easterly galo was' then blowing, and the ship remained at tho Point till March 8, when sho again put to sea, and passed Oapa Runaway tho next day, with the wind blqwing strong from tho south. On rounding the East Capo on March 10 tho. vessel met a heavy southerly gale, which was driving a dangerously high sea, and aB no progress could he made she ran beforo the gale, which rose steadily, causing great seas that sorely buHeted tho schooner till she rcached the Kawakawa roadstead, and obtained shelter. . A third attempt to continue the voyage was mado on March 16* and tno vessel continued her course through, the storm for threo days, with her decks Often swept by the waves. At midnight on March 19 sl full gala from the vest was blowing, which raised a very heavy and dangerous seji on the starboard quarter, and flooded tho galley, adding -to tho discomfort of thoso on board. Cape Campbell waß sighted at 10.30 on the night of March 26, and as tho galo was not abating, the schooner anchored in Bell's Covo tho ; next day. A j raging gale was then blowing from the i south, and a mountainous sea was run- j ning in Cook Strait., ■ j Once again Captain Cameron put to sea j Oil March 22, and after experiencing «; change of wind to the north on March 24, tliG gtorm passed, and for the remainder of the voyago tlio weather improved steadily. A representative of tho Blue Funnel Line h&s closed negotiations for the purchase of the Yone Maru No. 2, 7000 tons gross, from Suzuki and C 0.., of Kobe, and others of similar size from the Hashimoto Steamßhip Company, of Kobe. It is not the intention of tho American Government to commandcor sailing vessels at present, nor probably during tho duration of the war so far as tho Pacific is concerned. The Shipping and Food Boards were notified of the necessity for keeping all ponsiblo sailing vessels in the copra.t.rado. Tho authorities replied that the nitrate situation is serious, bnt that they expect to solve this problem with steam schooners f and leavo sailing ships to attend to tho copra, which is just as necessary in its way as nitrates. Messrs. Huddart, Parker, Ltd.'s hew turbine vessel Nairana, for the LjuncestonJfelbourno mail service, has been completed but has been taken for useful service elsewhere, says the "Shipping List."
