THE RECENT STORM
HOW THE ORCHARDS FARED. The following summary of reports on damage to orchards by the storm on March 18 has been supplied by the Department of Agriculture:— Whangarei and North Auckland.— Considerable damage to exposed orchards. South Auckland.—Ten to fifteen per cent, of apples and pears blown off. Poverty Bay.—Damage heavy. Waikato.—No serious damage. Wanganui.—Considerable loss of fruit, half crop on ground. Hawke's.Bay.—Damage <■ ot serious; ten per cent, maximum. Pears suffered more than apples. Manaivatu and Wairarapa.—Wairarapa losses up to thirty per cent.; Manawatu up to ten per cent; where sheltered, infinitesimal. Nelson—Damago considerable; one orchard washed away, others flooded. Crop shakon down, and loaded trees fallen over in exposed localities. Marlborough.—No damage. North Canterbury.—Little damage. South Canterbury.—No damage. Otago.—No serious damage. Onstom duties collccted at the port of Wellington yesterday amounted to £1702 lis. 7d.
