AiteAT AUTUMN HANDICAP WON BY CLENDOWER. BIPLANE'S CHALLENGE STAKES. (By Telegraph-3pecial Correspondent.) Chrlstohuroh. April 2. The Canterbury Jockey Club's .Autumn (Meeting concluded,in dull, bleak weather. (The ationdancs was good, and the course In improved order. The totalisator handled £40,696, making £82,620 lor the meeting, against £67,351 last year. The four acceptors went to the post for the Peerswick Hurdles, and though it looked a good thing for Jeannot the favourite was allowed to pay a false price. The Charlemagne II gelding soon went to the front, and, jumping well, ho was not leaded.. The Summit ran to him at the last fence, but, once over, the favourite came away and won easily. Bore was a Jioor third. Cast Iron was tailed off. Backers got a severe set-back in the lAoitumn Nursery Handicap, when they sent Torfreda out a, hot favourite,, but she was in trouble after goins half a mile, and finished last. Scorniul took charge at the distance, and, coming .away, won easily. Afterglow just beat 'Kilmoon for- second, place. • • . The two favourites in the Taldhurst Welter Handicap both got off badly. They ■were Hot Air, who was.lnst away, and tattle Eve. At the start Jin.so and Tremena went off with a good l;ad, but, the former was in trouble at the straight entrance. Here Achilledes ran Into second place, but hod no chance with) Tremena,' whp won by several lengths. Battle Eve finished well in third place, land Comely was close up fourth. Almo was the eleventh hour scratching Sor the Great Autumn Handicap. In tho ■birdcage Menelaus and Mascot both stripped well, and so did Wishful, Adjutant and Glendower. The bracketed pair was a [very hot order on tho machine. At the fetart Margerine went off in front, -but .■was soon joined by Ascalaphus, and they • fcot a fast pace tho first half-mile, taking Slsec. Down the back the favourites were leading. Ascalaphus was in charge at the half-mile, with Glendower, Margerine, and Adjutant next. Entering the straight Menelaus showed up on the outside, and iris victory was proclaimed, but his run iwas a short one, and Glendower came away inside tho distance. Mascot and Margerine put in claims, but neither had ,& chancs yith the loader, who won with l-a bit in hand. Adjutant was fourth, and ilhen came Ladogeur and Menelaus. ' J. W. Lowe saddled up another favouryite in the' Addington Handicap, but, Ithough she ran a good race, she could not ■Sll a place. The winner turned up in the English-bred Gay Lad, a member.of W. M'Donald'e team. He took charge at the lalf-mile, and ran away from the field. •Missouri beat the otherß comfortably, and ■Kimboltou was in third place, just clear M the-favourites. . Thern was a surprisingly cood field in ithe Challenge Stakes, but no one seriously thought Biolano would be beaten. At. ifho start, Koe'sian, on the rails, Hymestra, and Biplane went off in front, and the pace' was a cracker. ■ Entering the straight, the favourite left the others S'and came home with Deeley pulling him ''up. Heathercoto and Almoner had a great !;race for second place, whilo the other (four finished in a line. The winner got la great reception from tho crowd. His fawner has donated the proceeds of the ;jrace to the patriotic funds. . • ' Several! of tho runners had solid backing in the Templeton Handicap, and tho 'finish proved a very exciting one. At '(the straight entrance Daytime and Oroefeus appeared to be in front, but Killjoy nnd Mohawk were right up. At the distance Nystad took charge, and appeared ■io b9 winning easily, but Mohawk finished on -well and beat him in the last Stride.. Killjoy was close up, and then foame Gamecock. . ■: Form pointed to Glorify as possessing the best chance in tho concluding event, \ ■hut Disdainful was, a better favourite, j Majestikoff and Achilledes led for half a • jniie, when Glorify took charge and won ieasily.
