At the annual convention of the • Loyal Orange Lodge a motion was passed "That as the Irish Conreni tion has not'yet completed its sittings, I and the resignation of SSr Edwaaxl Car- ■ son from, the British Cabinet is indicative of a serious situation, we re* commend the Grand Lodge executive . to carefglly watch developments and act . as circumstances direct. That the lodge i emphatically protest against the recognition of the claims of the Pope to temporal sovereignty, and urges the . Dominion Prime .Minister to strenuons- , ly oppose any attempt to include the Pope as a member--of any Peace Conferences. That we heartily congratulate the Minister of Education upon his firm attitude towards sectarian interference with the State education system, believing as Tffe ■do that departure from the present system would destroy the inestimable value of our That we view with alarm the possible resuli/s which may arise from the institution of Protestant denominational schowls, and earnestly desire the governing bodies of Protestant communities to seriously consider the wisdom of such 'jjroposals. That wa urge the New Zealand Government' to grant no exemption from military ser- ' vice other than 'for medical unfitness. That we'view with alarm the attempts at mob rale ani suppression o£ free speech on the platform and ill the Press evidenced in recent outrages in the Dominion. 'Ifhe Grand Lodge expresses amazement at the utter lack of Magisterial discretion exhibited by Mr. Frazer, SM-, Auckland, and appreciation of tine outspoken utterance of the Chief Justice and Mr. M'Carthy, vS.M., Wellington. ' We, further desire ' to express the highest appreciation of the prompt action of the Minister ot Justice, the Horsn. T. M. WHford, and assure him of <[>ur implicit eonfidenca in his determination to suppress all such illegal practices. That the lodge earnestly urges the Prime Minister to strenuously oppose the return of the Pacific Island? to Germany. That the lodge strdngly sproWSts against tho expression in favour of Home Jluie for Ireland by Sir Thomas Mackenzie recently in' London, believing that such' expression was directly contrary to tho opinions of, ai overwhelming majority of the Protestant citizens of the Dominion."— Grand Committee J. 51' Donald, Johnston, AY. .T.
