SUCCESSFUL ATTACKS OF ALLIES GERMAN ARIES BADLY MAULED : AM.TBI) COUNTER-OFFENSIVE ' PREDICTED More heavy fighting south of the Somme is reported to-day, and an unofficial report states that the Germans have captured the town • of .Moreuil, which had previously changed hands four times. The • Allies have at a number of points recovered ground in successful counter-attacks, The Germanß are said to be concentrating for a renewal of the offensive north of the Somme, but there are predictions also, of an Allied counter-ofieensive. Public opinion in America aoclaims the appointment of General Forch as Generalissimo, and America has made an arrangement with the Allies which is of the highest importance. It will enable her troops, to be ranged as speedily as possible on the battlefront. Regiments which cannot yet be embodied in purely American divisions are to be brigaded with English and French troops. Indications are that American troops will very soon be taking part in the battle in considerable numbers. The energy with which America is attacking the'shipping problem appears in the announcement that during March ships aggregating 162,000 tons were completed in her yards, while others aggregating 240,000 tons were launched. The British column which is advancing -up the Euphrates, in Mesopotamia, has now covered half the distance from Bagdad to Aleppo. Ii is rumoured that Persia may join the Central Powers. Holland is now protesting angrily against • the Allied seizure of Dutch chipping,,
