BOWLS
PAIRS TOURNEY ABANDONED. On account of the very heavy rain and its effect on the greens (many ot which are showing the effect of a hard season}) it was decided yesterday morning to abandon the patriotic pairs tournament altogether, a decision, be it said, which met with the approval or the majority of those concerned m tiro tournament. In connection with the question, it is generally conceded that Easter tournaments are risky ventures in Wellington, owing to the uncertainty of tile weather. There have been occasions when fine weather has prevailed here throughout the Easter vacation,' but an inquiry into the weather statistics would show that as often as not tile weather has beon broken. This year Easter is early, yet it was ushered in with a teeming rainfall, which deadened every green, and took all the "finer art" out of the play. It shodd therefore be remembered by the' centre that Easter is not a reliable time for a tournament in this city, and also that, preferably, anything in the liaturo of tournament or championship play should be confined to that period between Christmas and the middle of March. ■
