There is every possibility of a proposal shortly being placed before the ratepayers of Carterton on tho question of raising a loan for the purpose of erecting an up-to-date municipal hall for the borough. The council has already considered plans for-the structure, and are now obtaining further data in connection with the object.^ The Easter holidays in the "Waira-rapa,-from a pleasure point of view, were 'somewhat marred by_ the weather. On the other hand the rain did an_ immense amount of good Irom an agricultural point of view. The Carterton police on Thursday last visited the . Glenburn Station, about fourteen miles south of To AVharau. Their appearance was observed by a scrub-cutters' camp, and about half a dozen men made off through the scrub, followed by the police., The latter succeeded in running one' man down,'who proved to be a military deserter from the Thirty-fifth Reinforcements, and he was handed over to the military authorities. . At a social gathering at Clarevillo during Easter, Private Lovell Daysh, who is leaving for the front, was presented with a wristlet-watch.
Over (two hundred Maoris left Carterton by-rail on Friday last, the majority of them being en route for Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, where a largo Nativo gathering is. to ba held this_ week. Bost of the Natives were visitors to this district, having been attending a Nativo gathering afc Carterton.'
