BRITISH RECOVER GROUND

DESPERATE FIGHTING IN THE SOUTH FOR WHOLE OF WEST FRONT '■ ADVANCES IN PALESTINE AND ■. MESOPOTAMIA To-day's reports show that the enemy is striving desperately to press forward in his offensive, but also that tho resistance of the Allies is steadily hardening. On the British front, after gaining some ground in the Somme valley and capturing the village of Mezieres, further south, the enemy, as reports stand, is firmly held at all points. On the southern section of the battlefront the French have defeated many attacks ?nd are rapidly, bringing up reserves, but in Bis latest efforts the enemy has made some headway north and south of the railway junction of Montdidier, capturing some villages and threatening the Allied line on the north. Bad weather has set in .which will hamper the enemy in bringing up men and guns over the devastated area in his rear. In spite of rain and wind the Allied airmen are tirelessly persisting in their attacks. An Australian cor-, respondent,. Mr. TV. Murdoch, gives an interesting account of the New Zealand Division and of its experiences during the winter. General Foch has been appointed Generalissimo of the Allied Western armies. The British column which is advancing up the Euphrates, in Mesopotamia, has developed its recent success. It now holds five thousand prisoners and has advanced to a point nearly two hundred miles west-north-west of Bagdad. Further successes are reported also in Palestine.
