From the NORTHERN KOLUSR MILLING CO., 1/TD. /To the Editor, "Times," Wellington. ■ Str,-<tn referaflco to the cheap advt. you have given us in your sub-leader of 23rd inst. on Cost of Living, you are aware we aro under Government control, and this Government w=ely last year fixed the irico of wheat lor 1918 at an advance to e-ncourago wheat- . urowtne In tie Dbmlnlon to kee» the money here, and it is apparent to any business man that the price of Hour should also advan'en. Wheat «nd flour are essentials which we cannot do without. You hnvs also advancotl tho jrico of your paper owine to the increased cost of the raw material, and naturally our oomplalnts would bo cut ' )n the waste-poner basket'. Wo aunt the enclosed letter to the Hon. StacDonald, Minister of Agriculture, which we think elucidates the wheat-growini; Question. Wβ remain, Yours truly, V. VIRTUE,' Manager. Auckland, N.Z., March 2nd, 1918. ' From tne NORTHERN ROLMiU MILLING CO., LTD. (Oopy.) The Bon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, ■Minister o[ Agriculture. Wellington. Dear Sir. WHEAT SEASON. 1919. W« notice some of the Southern Farmers Unions aro agitating for the price '/o bo fixed lor next year. Wo think it would be wise to indicate that nothing lower than 6s. net f.o.b. will be the price for good milling; there is no use tinkering with It to 'annoy wheat-grcwors, who will lose this year by (iamaucil crops, and Borne inducement must bo.offered to grow sufiicient nnd to BDaro for homo consumption, and it is doubtful if jou will not havo to advance prices with present crop if tho damage is serious. A penny per bushel is 2s. 10d. to <g. per ton of flour. The- millers and tho Government could como to terms as regards prices when the time arrives, but the Dominion's salvation is to set the wheat grown to produce sufficient flour, also bran and pollard for our dairying, bacon, and poultry industries, which suftered last year through scarcity, and it was a good ono for green feed in some respects, but if we had a dry ono with the- samo scarcity of bran and pollard there would bo dire re--Bults. A largo onantity of bran is used for horso feed, and chalf and oats have every indication of beine In short supply at high prices, and now that the Government has assumed .control, it must produco to keep tho essential industries going which are tho backbone of tho country. It is apparent with our heavy taxation - there should be no hampering of our essential industries. On tho raw material there are always two labour i-andlings, but not so on tho, manufactured imported articles. The railway revenue derived from gram under normat conditions must have been in the vicinity of about £90.000 per annum. Whether peace is declared or not during the year, the world's drainage for the nojt two years of Canadian, American, Indian, and Australian supplies will bo so heavy that if tho Dominion doesn't rise to tho occasion there will bo a . poor chance of getting from the countries mentioned, and wouldn't there he an uproar? If t!io Dominion's potato crop is a failure, more bread will bo used. Wo think this frightful war will bo won with tho stomach. We remain, Yours i espectfully, V. niITTJE, Manager. F.S.-Tlie price of the American wheat crop for 1918 is fixed at 12s. 6d. per bushel. Why hcsitateP-P.V. "THE DOMINION."
