MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. J. A. M i'Jwi'BoiJ, second engineer on' the Ngahere, has transferred to the Nga-, toro, and Mr. V. ilaplesden has joined the Ngahere. Mr. K". Ohieholm haß been appointed chief engineer of tho steamer Stella, which was recently purchased by the Otago Iron Rolling Mills Company, Ltd. Mr. Ohisholm, who has held the position as engineer on tho Peninsula Ferry Company's steamer Wairoka for the past ten years, will leave Dunedin shortly for Auckland to join the Stella. . , , _ Mr. A. B. Barker has joined the Ka.mona as pur-icr at Dunedin. Mr. 0. B. Mad Sen has signed 'On the lo A nan's articles as purser. The following changes of pursers in tho Union Company's service arc announced:— Mr. S. K. Ewan, of tho Suva office, has relieved Mr. W. JTN. Speers, who is ashore on holiday leave; Mr. R. The Poherua, with a oargo of coal from Westport, arrived at Wellington lato laßt night. The Kittawa is due this morning with a load of Greymouth coal. The Johu is duo this morning from Timaru, and alter discharging will load for Wvmganui. The auxiliary scow Echo is advertised to sail to-day at 5 p.m. for Castlenoint, Akitio, and Napier. The Invercargill will, after discharging at Wangauui, sail for Nydia Bay to load timber for Lyttelton, from which port she is due at Wellington on Wednesday next. The Kara was yesterday due at Tarakohe from New Plymouth to load a cargo of cement for Wellington. After discharge here tho vessel will load general cargo for Lyttelton. ■ , , Tho Union Company will dispatch tho Ooriuna with cargo for New Plymouth tomorrow. Oargo for Duncdin will be received by tho Poherua, probably sailing, to-morrow direct for that port. Tho Kdkapo is to leave Westport tonight for Wellington. The Ngatoro left Lyttelton yesterday for Greymouth to load coal for Bluff and Oaraaru. At tho last-named port she will load tallow for Wellington. If her overhaul is completed in time tho Ngalmta will sail to-morrow for Napier. A vessel's lower mast with rigging attached, showing 12ft. above water, waß on Friday sighted three miles north-west of Pepin Island, near Nelson. An addition to the Auckland fishing (loot arrived from Napier on Saturday. Tho vessel Is the etc.irn trawler Phantom, r-nrchaßrd by Messrs. Ifimroe Bros, from Messrs. Pernnndos and Sham, Wellington. The phantom, which is a wooden steamer 70ft.. long bv 14ft. beam and lift depth, built at Melbourne in 1891. bus bcen_engaged for a. nnmber of years in tho vicinity of Napier.
I Mr. Nelson, of Messrs. Ncleon and Robert60D, ot Sydney, iias received advices from San Francisco, stating that the success of the concrete ship is a-SBiirod, and that the first big vessel had been launched, alsp that an order had been placed in California for a 75G0-ton vessel. News also received from Washington states that contracts for ten 5500-ton concrete ships were let on February 2 by the Shipping Board to the Ferro-Ooncretc Shipbuilding Cor; poration of Redondo Beach. The first, vessel is to bo delivered -within six months, and tho other nine within a year. Tho building company will use a new plan of construction, recently natonted, by which it claims it can build tho vessels more rapidly than under old methods of working concrete.
