OVERSEAS TRADE IN THE YEAR 1917
IMPORTS REACH THE HUGE TOTAL OF £1,065,256,407. Tho Board of Trade Roturns. issued recently show that in December imports increased by £9,415,206, while British exports decreased by £2,787,946. For the whole of 1917 the values of imports and British exports, with increases compared with tho two preceding years, were as follow:— Inc. on Inc. on 1917. . 1916. 1915. Imports ... 1,055,256,107 116,749,915 213,363,057 British exports ... 525,309,991 19,029,284 140,440,543 Last year for the first time imports alono passed the thousand million mark, ornioro than our total overseas trade a little more than ten years ago. It should be remembered, however, that inflated values and not volume of trade are responsible for tho "record'' figures under both headings last year. Re-ex-ports declined by £28,014,000 in 1917. Exports of British manufactures in 1917 showed an increase of £28,198,689, and of this cotton alono accounted for £27,699,780. Tho principal deceases were £11,825,000 in iron and steel, £2425 in other metals, and £3,897,602 in chemicals. ' t! • ■'• Grain and flour last vear increased by £41,690,000 and meat by £8,421,454, Quantities are no longer given in tho roturns. On the last day of 1917 there were 37,192,0001b. of tea in bond, compared with 130,247,0001b. on December 31, 1916. Coffeo in bond at tho close of last year amounted to 1,113,000c\vt., compared with 1,324,000cwt. Homemade spirits in bond were 124,720,000 proof gallons in 1917, as against 139,202,000 gallons in 1916.
