Auckland, N.Z., March • 25th, 1918. Prom tne NOIITHEKN ROLLER MILLING CO., LTD. To the Editor, "Times,", Wellington. , Sfti-ln roferetfco fo the cheap advt. you havo given ub iu your sub-lender of 23rd inst. on Cost of Living, you are aware wo are under Government control, and the Government wi=ely Inst year fixed the frico of wheat for 1918 at an advance to encourage wheatcrowlng in the Dominion to Keen tne money here, and it Is apifaront to any business man that the price of flour should also advance. -Wheat and flour are essentials which we cannot do without. Yoa have also advanced tho ' prioo of your paper owing to the Increased coßt of the raw material, and naturally our complaints would bo nit In .the waste-paper basket. Wo sunt the enclosed letter to the Hon. MacDonald, Minister of Agrloulturo, which we think elucidates tho wheat-growing Question. Wo remain, Tours truly, V. VIRTUE, Mannicr. Auckland, N.Z., Maroh 2nd, 1918. From tneNOHTHERN ROLLER MILLING CO., LTD. (Copy.) The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, Minister of Agrloulturo, Wellington. Dear Sir. ' WHEAT SEASON, 1919. Wo notice some of the Southern Farmers' Unions are agitating for the price to be nxed lor next year.. We think it would be wise to indica'te that nothing lower than 6s. net f.o.b. will bo tho price for good milling; there is no use tinkering with It to annoy wheat-grcwers, who will lose this year by damaged crops, and some inducement must bo offered to grow sufficient and to spare for home consumption, and it is doubtful if *ou will not have to advance prices with present crop, if the damace is serious. A penny per bushel is 2s. '10d. to 4«. per ton of flour. Tho millers and tho Government could come to terms as regards priceß when the time arrives, but tho Dominion's salvation' is to get tho wheat grown to produce sufficient flour, also brau- and pollard for our dairying, bacon, and poultry industries, which suffered last year through scarcity, and It was a good one for green Eccd in some respects, but if we had a dry one with the same scarcity of hran and pollard there would bo dire results. A largo- ouantity of brau is used for horse feed, and chad and oats have every indication of being In short supply at high prices, and now that the Government has assumed control, it must produce to keep the essential industries going which aro tho bacKbono of the country. It is apparent with our heavy taxation there should be no hampering of our essential industries. On the raw material there are always two labour i andlings, but not so on tho manufactured imported articles. Tho railway yevemie derived from Brain undo; - normal conditions must have been in the vicinity of about £90,000 per annum. Whether peactf is declared or not during tho year, the world's drainage for the nest two years of Canadian, American, Indian, and Australian supplies will bo so heavy that if the Dominion doesn't rise to tho occasion there will be a poor chance of getting from the countries mentioned, and wouldn't there be an uproar? If the Dominion's potato crop ii a failure, more bread will be used. We think this frightful war will lie won with the stomach. We remain, Yours i espectfnlly, V. nitTTJE, Manager. F.S.—Tile price of the American wheat crop for 1918 is fixed at 12s. 6(1. per bushel. Why hesitate?
