Earp Bros, and Co., Ltd., In Sydney, in their March report state that the shipping position up, to tho present has not altered, to r.ny material extent. It is anticipated that, in the very early future, a further number of coastal vessels -will bo withdrawn for oversea service, which will necessitate the employment to the' fullest capacity of those vessels remaining in the trade. Notwith-
standing the shortage of. tonnage, work at the collieries -is being well maintained, tho majority of the mines recording praotically full time. : , A considerable business io. being done in hunkering oversea steamers, the foreign, going trade being othorwise very quiet. Botlt the interstate aud New Zealand demand continues strong. Freights to foreign ports veumin purely nominal, but a sharp rise, in rates to .New Zealand is recorded.

An interim dividend of 3 per cent, was paid on tho preference Block and ono of 4 per cent, on the ordinary shares in September. A further 3 per ceut. is declared on the preference capital,but the ordinary shareholders are to receivo 6 per cent., of which 2 per ceut. Is by way of bonus, making the samo return an for 1916. The appropriation out of trading profits to the reserve- fund is £10,567, and the-surplus from the sale of the Hygeia and other assets lias also been" transferred to it, raising this fund by 30,000 to £70,000. The balance carried forward is £8940, compared- "with '£11,760 brought into the accounts. Tho insurance reserve has expanded by £33,464, and that for continspneies by £0122, while sundry, creditors have increased by £26,916. Gisborno cargo will- bo received this morning by the Ripple, sailing at noon. The agents adviso that further consignmonta of Napier cargo will-not be received. The auxiliary scow Eoho, on her way down tho coast from Napier, will load Napier and Gisborno cargo at Wellington to-morrowi
Cargo for Greymouth and Hokltika will he received by a Union Company's cargo steamer on Thursday.
Tho auxiliary schooner May Howard, which left Auckland on March! for Duncdin, passed East Capo bound north on March 12. Presumably -she was making for .shelter, and her arrival at Dunedin will thercforo bo delayed for some time.
The Mapourikn, arrived at Auckland at 10 p.m. on Sunday, and is to leave to-day direct for Wellington.
To-night tho Corinna is to iave New Plymouth fully laden with produce for Wellington.
Yesterday afternoon tho Ngatoro sailed for Lyttelton. to discharge tho remainder of her coal cargo. Tho Ngahcre is duo at Wellington to-morrow or on Thursday; fully" laden; from Groymouth.
The Ngakuta went, on the slip yesterday fov overhaul. Tho next vessels aro the Wellington dredge Whakariri, and the New Elymouth dredgo Paritutu, which is duo nt, Wellington on April 5. . ;In connection with tho discovery of the surf boat near Wairoa bearing the name "Bortha Dolbocr," it may be mentioned that tho vessel of that name is registered by Lloyd's as a wooden three-masted sohooncr of 243 tons gross. Her dimensions v/ero 125 ft. in length by'3lft. sin. in width, and a draught of 9ft. Gin. She was built in 1881 at Fairhaven by K. D. Bendlxon for the owner, Jlr. ,T. Dolbccr. The vessel was acquired in 1901 by the Fncific Slates Trading Company. Messrs. Maillor and Qucreau, in their New York circular, dated December 20, 1917, state:—"Shipping business is far from, satisfactory. For tho past twenty days no ■steamer has been loading for any Australian port, owing to the practical impossibility of getting any prompt tonnage. Freight rates continue.very firm, and with present condition of tonnage we can see no prospect o£ any lower rates for mouths to come,
Tho -Sydney office 'of Messrs. Burns, ?hilp and Co., Ltd., on Jlnrch 18 received a cable message from their London office advising that Major Flood,, ono of the military .passengers of the Matunga, now .in London, states that he spoke' to Captain Doualdson, master of the Matunga, on board the raider Wolf, about January 10, andOaptain Donaldson then reported that the crew of the Matunga were all .well.. The cable message does not mention passengers, but it is assumed that the indention of the captain was to report that all tho people from the Matunga were well on that date.
