THE FOREST FIRE
CITY.RELIEF MEETING.
A moeiing called by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) was held yesterday afternoon for the purpose of organising the effort to raise funds with which to relieve the distress caused by the recent bush fires in the Waimarino district. The Mayor, who presided, said that the distress was considerable, and that it was the duty of the people here to do what they could to afford relief. He intended to go to the scene of the trouble on Wednesday in connection with the relief work.
» The Rev. Mr. Stent, d Eastbourne, said he thought that it was very necessary to take steps to avoid overlapping. The Mayor said that that would be one of the" objects of his visit. Mr. Stent added that he understood tnat clothing had been sent in almost extravagantly, and he -thought that it would be better now to send such things as household chattels. The meeting resolved to form itself into a committee to raise funds in Wellington for the relief of tho ■ sufferers, and that the Town Clerk should be the treasurer. The Mayor stated to the Press that at noon yesterday £175 ss. had been received in the city toward the fund.
