CARNIVAL AT EVANS BAY

PATTERSON'S FAST 100 YARDS

Under the auspices of the Evans Bay Swimming Club a carnival of natatorial events was hold at Evans Bay on Saturday afternoon, in aid of tlic distressed settlers of tho Raetihi district. There was a largo gathering of spectators, aud (he afternoon was a complete success. Among those present was tho Mayor (Mr. J. l>. Luke), who delivered a short address touching on the progress the club had made recently. During the afternoon a collection was taken up in aid of the afore-mentioned oause. Much interest centred around the performance of Patterson, who, it was announced, covered 100 yards in 58 1-osec, thus clipping 2sec. oft his own New Zealand record. Versatility was lent to the programme by a demonstration of life-saving on the part of the Maranui Club and by the rendering of musical selections' by the Patriotic Society's Band. In r the ladies and men's relay race Miss Ayling came in for much commendation by her action in giving up the race in order to assist another competitor, Miss Rigg, who was seized with cramp. Messrs. J. J. Martin and J. Heavy officiated as handieappers and starters, and Messrs. J. Flanigan, B. Guise, ajid G. Davideon as judges. The judges in the diving events were Messrs. G. S. Hill, A. A. Somerville, and J. D. Foster. Appended are tho results :—
