AIRMAN'S HEROISM
ATTEMPT TO SAVE A COMRADE AT SEA. Lie'itenant Cecil 0. Fedden, Indian Infantry, attached Royal Flying Corps, was buried with military honours at Berwick early in January. While flying over the sea on a Mondav morning Lieutenant Fed'len's machine • nosedived owing to engine trouble, and remained afloat Injj up. He tried to swim ashore, but the strong current prevented him, and also bore away lifebuoys dropped 'iy other aircraft. Flight Commander Hodges and hie observer then with all speed went to tho_ place whero Lieutenant Feddeu was clinging to his disabled machine.
The flight commander dropped into ihe ice-cold water, and, clinging to the framework of the aeroplane w<h ono «rm, placed the other round the numbed and nxlmueted airman, who soon after lost consciousness. He held Lieutenant Fedden tightly pressed against his body for warmth for threequarters of an hour. Ln'';er both were rescued hy a fishing-boaf. Flight Commander Hodges was quite exhausted, mid almost unconscious by that time. Lieutenant Fedden, though living when he was brought to land, died nf nxhaustion shortly afterwards.
