RETURNED SOLDIERS
LABOUR COUNCIL AND THEIR EMPLOYMENT. By Telegraph—Press Asaooiatlon. Dunedin, March 22. At a meeting of the Labour Council, it was resolved to communicate with the Federation of Labour, suggesting action of a national character through the federation executive regarding the repatriation of soldiers, _ and recommending the following lines of agreement between the and the federation for providing 'facilities for employing incapacitated soldiers either as under-rate workers or learners, the agreement to be made an Order-in-Council: — Wages to be fixed by a Soldiers' Employment Board, consisting of representatives of the employers, the discharged soldiers, the Government and the trade union.
■ Total; wages, inclusive of a Government subsidy, to be paid to the soldier to be not less than the minimum sum of tho union wage. The subsidy to In borne by the Stato would be a direct tax on tho land values of tho 'Dominion.
■ The minimum, rate to bo exclusive of the pension, and t'uring tho currency of tho under-rato riermifc in the period of apprenticeship tf tho soldier tho Pension Board shall not review the. pension. The period of apprenticeship or currency of the permit to be estimated from the time it is first granted till the soldier is declared a competent worker.
