RECRUITING IN AUSTRALIA
DEFICIENCY OF 30,000 MEN
Melbourne, March 22. Sir Samuel Griffith's report on the recruiting position states that last year 51,639 men were withdrawn from the forces. These figures include deaths, returned men, and prisoners of war. To replace tho average wastage 5400 enlistments monthly are necessary, in addition to 30,000 required to meet the present deficiency. The total enlistments to tho end of 1917 wero 38i .920, out of which 68,937 wero discharged; or deserted, or died before embarkation. The total embarked is 310,853, leaving Bi3P. still in training. Mr. W. M. Hughes comments that the only hone is to use one division as a depot division, and endeavour to raise 5400 men monthly. The Federal Cabinet has empowered the Recruiting Committees to compel picture theatres to exhibit, free _of charge, approved films for recruiting purposes, and to permit of tho delivery of rrcrnitir.cc speeches during their exhibitions.—Press Assn.
