DEATH OF A RETURNED SOLDIER

Christchurch, March !22. ■ T!ie death occurred in Christchurch Hospital to-dav from the effects of wounds received in action in Franco of Private Alex-inle.r Gray, who was well known in scholastic and llugby circles in Canterbury. Private Gray left New Zealand with the Twentythird Reinforcements. He was wounded in the hip some time ago and invalided back to New Zealand, arriving in Christchurch last Tuesday. He was not a cot case, hut apparently the * wound was septic. The late Private Gray took his B.A. degree at Canterbury College in 1895. He was master in charge of the secondary department at Akaroa District Hish School, when he obtained leave of absence to enable hhn to .go on active service, although V was close on the military age limit.' 111 his younger days Mr.. Gray was an enthusiastic Rugby footballer, and was one of the earliest members of Canterbury College Club, in whose first fifteen he played :s. iVrward. About a year before he left. New Zealand he was married to Miss 0. Lo Lievre, of AkaToa. and he leaves a widow and uie child. ■ ' '
