STONEMASONS' DISPUTE
CASE BEFORE CONCILIATION COUNCIL. A complete' agreement wa« arrived at between the parties to tho stonemasons' dispute when that' matter was brought beiore the Conciliation' Council Mr. W. Newton, Conciliation.Commissioner, ■ presiding. . The definition of stonemasons work was altered to read: '.'Cutting, fixing, building, or cleaning down stonework, pointing joints, and any other work connected" with stone-work requiring the use of stonemasons took. ttVos: Journeymen stonemasons. Is 9d". per hour; stonemasons engaged working sandstone, 2a. per hoVir extra, and when working granite 2s. ]H>r week extra. A war bonus of Id. per hour in excess of the above rates, 13 to bo paid while the Empire remains in attEto of war. Overtime remains the same as in the old award, w th the addition of time and a half for Saturday afternoon. ..„-,„ Under the heading of "General Conditions," it was agreed that employers are to provide sanitary conveniences, shelter sheds, a room .for lunch, and facilities for tho.'nicn to obtain boiljn,r water at the meal hour. fho scope of the award has been extended to take J» persons doing business within 100 miles ot Wellington. Lhe scope of the previous award was 25 miles. . . • The conditions agreed upon in regard tc under-iate workers,' country and suburban work, piecewoik, term of tools, apprentices, and preference are the same as in the previous award. ' Tho new award is to operate from April 1, 1918, to March 31, 1920. The representatives of both workers and employers expressed satisfaction at the success of the deliberations, and the Hon. J. Barr moved, and Mr. Mainland spoonded, n hearty vote of thanks to the Commissioner.
