In response to the appeal for clothing for tho sufferers from the terrible blisli fires made by. Mrs, W. -f. Massey yesterday, an exceedingly generous response ots made by Wellington citi«ens, a great supply of clothing of excellent quality having been received. Several cases were dispatched in time to cftfcch the Main Trunk express, and to-day soveral more are ready to send bway. It has to bo remembered that many of tho people have lost simply everything, so that ill needs have to bo met, even to tho point of blankets, jvlu'eh wore included in what was sent in yesterday. 'The clothes were received in the gymnasium of the Sydney Street BolclieiV Club, where they were being packed all day yesterday. Mrs. Maseey aiidthe Women's National Reserve who are. working in conjunction with her have good reasrn to he pleased with their firft day's wo.vk.
Tho appeal of the Young Women's Christian Association for warm clothing for the sufferers at Kaetihi,, Horopito, and Ohakune has met. with a remarkable response from the citizens. Numbers of-parcels were delivered at •the Y'.W.C.A. on Wednesday eight, and •■they continued to arrive all day-yester-day. Members, of the Board of Directors were, in readiness for sorting and packing.- -No fewer than seven- cases .were dispatched by the .Main Trunk train yesterday morning. Mrs. Pearson, president of the Y.W-.C.A., has gone to Raetihi to. help the women there and to help in the distribution' of the clothes. Parcels of warm clothes may continue" ! to be sent to the Y.W.C.A., liWlds's Buildings, Herbert Street, and will be specially acceptable as early as possible after 7.45 this morning, so as to enable the workers to dispatch the cases in time for tho Main Trunk Donations have been received as'follow: Mrs. Hall, £2; Mrs. Cockrill and daughter (Otaki), £6; "Anonymous," 10s.; Mrs, Greeks, 2s. •
Social Hygiene Committee,
, A meeting of the executive of the Social' Hygiene Committee was held on Tuesday, at the rooms of tho Society for tlie Protection of "Women and Children. There were present: Lady Stout (presiding), Mrs. Ncill, and Mrs, M'Vicar (Hospital Board), Mrs. Donaldson, Miss England, and Mrs. Harvorson (lion, secretary). Correspondence was read and discussed, including a letter.froln the Prime Minister concerning the position' occupied by Miss E."A. llouf in llornchurch. It was unanimously agreed that there was unquestionable need for a clinic in Wellington to cope with the spread of venereal disease, and a resolution was passed to the effect that the Hon.G.W. Russell should he approached in the matter with a view to obtaining his sanction to the establishing of a free clinic on the same lines_ as that now being carried on in Christchurch, the committee beiiig most anxious to ta-ko immediate steps in ibis direction if the Government will give its approval, llie r-pectacle of so many returned soldiers in the streets in a state of almost helpless drunkenness on Monday, and the need for policewomen to protect young girls from the overtures which these irresponsible men mado to them, was brought forward, but it was held that this was a matter for tho Society) for the Protection of Women and Children to deal with. . :
The Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke) and her daughter, Nurse Belle Luke, aro holiday-making in Napier. Mrs. Luke was suffering from a rather severe cold when the Mayor left Napier on Wednesday morning., .

A garden party in connection with Wesley Church, Island Bay, will be held in the grounds of Mr. 11. Keen on Saturday next. Music will , bo rendered .by the Central Mission Silver Band. Miss Elaine Anthony-Jones, the English authoress, was knocked down in London, by a motor-car during January, and died in St. George's Hospital a few days afterwards. Her sister, who was also knocked down, was killed on tho spot. Miss Elaine Anthony-Jones, who was at one time editor of "Woman's Life," wrote several novels wider tho pseudonym of E. M. Jameson. She was also a contributor Jo tho leading English and American magazines.

The Spinsters' Club is holding an "At Homo" at Mrs. Isaacson's residence, 'Nona .Hay, on Saturday afternoon, in aid t>l the Red Cross and Red Triangle. There will he a sale of produce, cakes, pickles, conserves,-flowers, sweets, etc., and children aro specially provided for through a wonderful "frrandiuii," from whoso innumerable pockets -in endless supply of ".surprises" will bo found. . In addition there will be a. hunt for hidden treasure, and character reading should provide a great deal of entertainment to those, anxious to sep themselves a.i others happen to see them. Inquiry Into Educational Syaterri, The inquiry boforo the Canterbury Gomniissionpr (Jlr. J. A. Frostick) on the National Efficiency Board into matters relating to the national system of education was opeued nt Chtieichurch on Tuesday (states the ''Lyttelton Times"). For some time prior to the formal opening of the inquiry the Commissioner has been collecting evidence. Tho evidence given dealt almost exclusively with'tho kindergarten system ns it obtains in this country and in' comparison' frith tho-same system in otlioi* countries. Evidence will bo sought from Chicago and otlifer places where this system of training has been placed upon a scientific basis, and> coordinated with the primary system. Tho necessity for physical and moral training was very strongly- emphasised. The details in connection with this and other questions cannot be made public until the hoard is in a jrasition to review all the evidence and make its report. Evidence has also been taken with regard to tho necessity for linking up every form of instruction ; that the qualifications of teachers should be assured, and, in some cases, -the standardconsiderably raised. The necessity was pointed out for co-ordination between the various systems through which any student can pass; in order to prevent overlapping, and the whole national scheme brought into line with the latest approved methods, particularly with recard to that period between the passing of the sixth standard aud the secondary, technical schools; and workshops. The scope of the inquiry takes in practically all matters relating to every form and branch of national instruction, and .includes kiucferearten teaching,- primnry, secondary,-technical, and university education..
Navy League Loan Exhibition. Yesterday afternoon a meeting of members of the.Navy League 'was held in the league room for the purpose of promoting a Navy League Loan Exhibition in aid of the league funds. Thero was a very good attendance, including members of. the Ladies' Auxiliary and friends interested in the proposal, which was tho subject of discussion. Mr. von Haast presided, and there were present Mrs. Hall-Thompson (president of the Ladies' Auxiliary), Mrs. Coleridgo, Mrs. Bradney-Williams, Miss Edwin, Mrs. Harding, Mrs. C. Earle, Miss Holmes, Mrs. ] D'Oyly, Mr. Darrocb, Mr.. C. 'Wilson, Mr. Kcesing, Mr. Ellis, and Mr.. Bates and others. Apologies wero recoived from Mrs. Adams, Mrs. von Haast, Mrs. Tripe, the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, and Mr. Gore. The meeting formed itself into a committee, a small sub-committee being set up to formulate ways-and means by which the loan exhibition might be organised. . As outlined, the exhibition will include a very varied field of-art, and should bo the means of bringing to tho light of day many, unsuspected treasures, which at the present time ■live in retirement in the homes of Wellington citizens. Sculpture, 'pottery, engravings, metal work, paintings, drawings, jewellery, textiles, old china, illuminated AIMS., etc., should make a most interesting collection-, ar.d in addition, there will be a nautical and military section and a collection .of artistic souvenirs to be sold for (be benefit of the funds. The wedding took placo at Otano on Wednesday of Miss Mabel C. Tod, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Tod, "The Park," Otane, and Mr: lan Balfour, son of the late Mr. Balfour, who was manager of the Bank of New Zealand in [Napier for many years. The bride, who was given away by her father, was attended by Miss G. Downes, of Waipawa, as bridesmaid, and Mr. J. Tod (brother of the bride) was best man. The Rev. J. A. Asher performed the ceremony, which took place at the residence of the bride's parents.
