TORRENTIAL RAIN SAVES OHAKUNE
ALL DANGER PASSED. By TeleEraph.—Press ABsociation Taihape, March 20. Telephonic communication was restored with Raetihi and Ohakuno at four o'clock this afternoon. Intermittent rain fell over the whole district from mid-day on Tuesday. Between the showers the fire regained any lost force, hut during the night it rained in torrents, transforming the over-power-ing brilliancy into_ darkness. It came to Ohakuno , s aid just in time to save tho town. Residents had a very anxious time, believing their homes were doomed. The fires are nearly out at Raetihi and tho people nre flocking back by special trains run for tho purpose. It is confidently believed that no lives were lost. In addition to the Raetihi business premises destroyed, eighteen or twenty residences were :i complete loss. There is no further danger at Rangataua or in the other part of this fire zone.
