PUBLIC SYMPATHY
GOVERNMENT WILL DO ITS DUTY
Sir Joseph Ward made a reference yesterday to tho disaster that had overtaken the Raetihi, wJieu ho made an address to business men of the city regarding the War Loan. He said ho was very sorry to have to ask them all to join with him m extending sympathy to the residents of Raetihi, where a terrible fire had taken place. He was sure that they wore all deeply sensible of the loss and suffering of the inhabitants of the town, and very sympathetic with them in their trial.
At the conclusion of the meeting Mr. Beauchnmp moved the following resolution:
"That the .citizens of Wellington, in pubify meeting assembled, desire' to convey to the inhabitants of Raetihi heartfelt sympathy, and to assure them that if financial assistance is required it will bo given."
Tho resolution was seconded by Mr. 0. R.. Smith, and carried unanimously. Sir Joseph Ward said later that he approved very much of the resolution, and that, ho beleived that the Government would do its duty by the people if they should need financial assistance.
