THE SMOKE AT SEA
FERRY STEAMER DELAYED.
Navigation in Cook Strait was made difficult yesterday morning by the density of the smoke from the Raetihi bush fire, and the Mararoa, from Lyttelton, was delayed for four and a half hours.
A strong head wind had prevailed during the night, and when at day-light-the vessel ran into the thicksmoky atmosphere, thoughts of a fog were dispelled by the rising sun, which sliono red through the thick pall cf smoke. A few anxious hours were' spent by the navigators in picking up Wellington Heads, and the sounding lead had to be used . snd the engines reversed two or t] lreo times before the entrance was discerned. The Mararoa was berthed at 51.50 a.m.
One effect of the smoke lying low over the harbour was the presentation of an optical illusion to residents of Oriental Bay. What had {-ho appearance of an ocean liner, of an unusual build for«.a vessel of her size, moving up the harbour and dangerously near the rocks, proved, when the smoke temporarily lifted, to be the steamer Nikau, which had been unevenly magnified l by the refraction of the atmosphere.
