TRAINING SCHEME IN CANTER- . ! ; ; BURY. The.Lands Department own a block of. 1200 acres at Southbridge, in the 'Canterbury district, which is consider- . cd.'to be specially suitable for soldiers' settlement or in the meantime for a training farm for soldiers where they may acquire experience of agricultural methods. An Application has beeij'-made ■ bv'the Canterbury patriotic Society to ■the Government to have this land 'band-' rd over for the purpose of training sol- . dier settlers for the term-of the war, and;: if necessary for a short period '/afterwards. The .proposal came, before Cabinet' yesterday, and was agr.e.ed to, on 'the distinct ' understanding - that wheu the war conies to an end the land ' will be handed, back for '■ its original purpose—that of soldier settlement.
