THE FUTURE OF SAMOA

Sjr,—ln your issuo of to-day Henry Walton, of \Vaikanac, scolds me for differing with iMr. Massey and Sir' Joseph Ward on a question of international policy. He suggests that my-letter gives the enemy cause to smile. I would remind him that they smiled at our "contcmptiblo littlo army," and the sinking of the Lusitania; but they don't now. And though they may smile with pleasure at a Britisher proposing that our Empire sticks to its word and keeps its hands clean, 1 maintain that to do so is a far-seeing policy which most surely makes for victory, and a lasting peace.' It will be a. crushing blow to Prussian autocracy when we force them back within their old boundaries and make them pay for certain restitution.

Our great, Ally, the United States of America, will probably insist that any alteration of national boundaries shall not bo decided by conquest, but by international law, laid down by tbe growing League of Nations that are fighting for freedom from military despotism. The successful future of our Empire lies, not so much in holding new strategic points and a large military machine, as in cultivating-the spirit of honesty and fair play for which we have gradually been winning a name among tho nations of the world.—l am, etc., , WILL B. MATHESON. Eketahuna, March 14, 1918.
