MAGISTRATE'S COURT
At the Court on Saturday, Mr. 'S- E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided, and dealt with the police cases. Ellen Dora Hughes was charged that on Mnrch 14 she did wilfully set fire to a dwelling-house in Rodrigo Road, Kilbiniie, occupied by Frank Bottly Cooke. On th-e application of Chief Detective Boddam a remand for a week was granted. A young woman named Branda Stuart Cross, 21 years of age, was charged that between June and Julv. 1916, at Sydney, she did conspire to defraud Thomas Henry Mullet of a large sum of money. Chief Detective Boddam applied for a remand for a week. Mr. A. R. Hoggard, who appeared for the accused, asked for bail, and in doing so said that the girl was herself 'the victim of a greater fraud and evidence would be given to prove that. Ho asked that the hail might bo light as she had come from a different district', and did not know many people in Wellington. Chief Detective Boddnin said that the woman was arrested near Kkctaliuna the previous day. She had made a statement to thn police which had not yet been verified, hut which if true, would support the statements of counsel. Rail was granted in the sum- or £100 and two sureties of £50 each. Patrick Simiott. who uw found drunk, iind against whom there was ono previous conviction, \/as fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment. .Tamos TTenley, Who was found helplessly drunk in Cuba Street, and had In receive niodical treatment, was fined 205.. in default 48 hours' imprisonment, and was ordered to pay 17s. Od. -medical expenses, with the option of seven days' imprisonment. ■ For insohriclv four first offenders were each fined Ms., in clo'atilt 24 hours' imprisonment.
