THE MUNICIPAL CLUB
The Wellington Municipal Golf Club had a : very successful opening on Saturday. The weather wns all that could be desired, and there wore about seventy members and friends present. • The president (Dr. ]{. A. Cameron), in the course of his remarks, advocated the continuance of sport as a means of keeping in a state of bodily fitness and so realy for all emergencies. /'Colonel Hughes. C.M.G., D.5.0., 'made a point of tue fact that our soldiers at the front desired that sport should be continued here, and took a keon interest in what wo were doing here, and looked forward to rejoining their old clubs,- so it was up to us to keep the clubs going. The opportunity was taken of presenting Dr. Cameron with a memento of the work he had done towards pre■sorving- the rights of citizens to indulge in Sunday recreation on the town reserves. In his reply Dr. Cameron reiterated his viows on statutory freedom from sectarianism. The I Cameron Challenge Shield was presented to the winner for 1917, Mr. Fred. Dunlop. The president then drove Ihe "first ball and declared the season open. An exhibition match between J. A. Clements, professional at the Minimal , flolf Club and ex-champion of Now Zealand, against the best hall, Messrs. W. Whitehead and J. 1,.,81ack, members of tho club, was played and enjoyed by those present as a fine exhibition of golf. The wants of tlio visitors and members as regards refreshments were ably ministered to by the wives of the president and committee.
