NOTES AND COMMENTS

[BY GMNCOE.I The annual race meeting of the Hangitikci Club will bo held on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Racing will commence at 11.30 a.m. vacli day. By his win in tho Waiinate Cup Miaul has incurred a. 51b. .cimlty for the 0.J.0. Great Autumn Handicap, to be run on April 2. The hoi-MB owned by the Jlanawatu sportsman, Mr. G. Soifcrt.aro now trained at Awapuni by B. Oliver. The- wellknown horseman. W. Bell, was onered tho post of private trainer for Mr. Seifcrt, but ho preferred to continue riding. Twenty-three hors» oro left In tlio Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton, and fifteen in the Great Autumn Handicap. A Dunedin writer says: "The well-known Southland rider, W. Robinson, who has beon aeEociated with P. T. Hpgan'a stable for some years, recently received an oner of £5,00 e, yc*r as a, retainer from a North

Island owner." If this is so it is the Ks» gest retainer ever paid to a jockey in tho Dominion. T. Quinlivan, now manager for Urs. at, A. Perry, was recently asked to put t> pi'ice on 'Demostheneß, and the reply given was ten thousand guineas. It is statce that the prospective buyer represented a newly-formed Etud in the Wairarapa district.

Mr. Percy Wall, of Hatuina, who ownß Lady Kilworth, has purchased the AH Black-Esmah colt (full-brother to Binghaw), from Mr. E. J. Wutt. A. W. Quinlivan, who trains Lady Kilworth, will have charge of the youngster's education. Mr. Wall has also purchased the Martian gelding Zeus, who remains in J. Sceats a charge. . •

1 Silver and Black did not accompany Mr. E. J. Watt's other horses to Sydney, thu All Black-Conoordia II fllly having been disposed of during the progress, of the Napier Park Meeting to Captain Barrett, of Christchurch. The filly, however, wiiL still remain in Hastings, having been given to K. Quinlivan to irain.

Some surprise was expressed when Parisian Diamond was found to be an accrptqr in the 0.J.0. Great Easter Handicap, as it, was the general opinion that the Hastings, horse would bo at Ellersllo on that date. The difficulty of securing a suitable rider for Ellerslie rjay cause Mr. G. D. Beatsoa to 6end the horse south. ■

Parisian Diamond has been Tehandicapped at 9st. sb. in the Scott Memorial Handicap at the Rangitikei Meeting. The soft of Hope Diamond is spoken of as an uiir likely starter.

The Opunake Meeting will be'held to-day. Amongst t)ie runners in tho St. Patrick's; Handicap, six furlongs, is the Haweratrained Goropett, \vho was noticed allowing a great dash of speed on the second: day of the Wanganui Meeting.

The Grafton gelding Plymouth, Trho formerly carried Mr. 0. L. .Stead's colours in the Dominion, succeeded in winning the Hurdles at Rosehill on Saturday, carrying lOst. 101b., to victory. The ai;ed Spalpeen gelding Tararu Jack, with. 12st. in the saddle, filled third place.
