£23,500

RED TRIANGLE APPEAL

FINAL RESULTS TO COSIE

SUCCESSFUL STREET COLLEC-

TION

Up to Saturday night the total of Wellington and suburbs, in the Red Triangle Day .appeal., was £23,500, leaving a sum of £1500 to bo got before reaching the target of £25,000. A number of lists from Civil Service Departments nnd business firms have yet to come in to-day, while several companies, having head oilices in London and other overseas places, are still waiting answers from their principals as to the extent of the donations to bo made. 'The committee (hopes, when these are all in, that Wellington will have more than 'realiced its objective. As, hqwover, tho matter is still in doubt it is hoped that any firm or private citizen who may have been overlooked in the canvass, will take an opportunity of paying their cheques in early, so that when the clock is finally moved it will strike to the tune of £25,000.

Dominion Results. Reports received from country districts indicate generally that in most centres tho targets set have been realised. As a number of remote country districts have yet to send in returns, while other important districts are not holding their Red Triangle Day till Easter, tho announcement of the final results of the appeal for trench comforts for tho troops will not be made till early next month. A fine spirit has permeated the people's giv'ng throughout the country. Apart from a few comparatively small entertainment returns, the bulk of , tho money has come from direct donations.

War Tank to be Sold. The tanks on the Western front were used for the "big push." Wellington's war tank was used in the "big pull." It pulled money out of tight fists and easy pockets in a most satisfactory way, paying for itself many tfmes over. As a final contribution to the Red Triangle funds, the auctioneer, with his all-powerful hammer, will knock tho tank down to the highest bidder. Tho auction will be held at a quarter to two o'clock to-morrow afternoon at the Bank of New Zealand corner, and it is expected that the prospective buyers will include leading financiers in the country, to whom the possibilities of this mechanical appealer—quite distinct by the way from the mechanical applepeeler—are more than evident. If the Minister of Finance comes along, as rumour has it lie is, to buy tho war tank to start his new war loan with, ho will find keen bidders pitted against him. Every organiser of patriotic appeals in the Dominion has heard of the war tank, and rumour lias it that they are hurrying hotfoot from every point of the compass to try to secure the tank. It lias been urged that every' consideration should bo shown Sir Joseph Ward in his bidding, as tho war loan is a large and lumpy sum, and the Red Triangle tank is "just the fellow" to ensnilf and carry tons of money to the Treasury as a daily recreation. And it would be fitting work for a war tank.

The Clock's Last Jump. The closing scenes of a groat endeavour compel attention. Tho last jump of the' Red Triangle clock at'the Bank of Now Zealand corner will bo one of the most impressive of tho scenes connected with this popular appeal. Another will be the war tank bowling along on all its feet, making for its new stables at tho Treasury. But that has nothing to do with the clock. Its humble dial reckons only in thousand;). Nevertheless, when Mr. Harold Beauchamp, chairman of the Citizens' Committee, climbs- up at 2 o'clock to-morrow and tenches the telltale hand it will jump—like the frog in Mark Twain's story which wasn't loaded. Just what figure the clock will leap to will depend on many large and small tilings, including the money the salo of the tank produces. It is almost certain that the hand will swing clear past the perpendicular—hut how far will only be known when it is scon.
