HOSPITAL SHIP UNSUCCESSFULLY ATTACKED AT ENTRANCE OF BRISTOL .CHANNEL London, March 14. Tho Admiralty announces' that the hospital ship Guildford Castle, homeward bound, was unsuccessfully attacked by a submarine at tho entrance of the Bristol Channel on the evening of March 10, whilo flying Red Cross flags, and with all hospital lights on.—Aus.N.Z. '" "The Times"' naval correspondent writes: "Tho losses emphasise the seriousness of the situation. The nation must realise that it has entered upon the most critical period of tho war. Practically every estimate of supply and production has been falsified by events. Priority of consideration must be given to the problem of combating the submarines. Unless anti-submarine appliances for seacraft and aircraft are forthcoming quickly in adequate quantity the aggregate losses will continue to mount until not all tho resources of the Allies will be sufficient to r.opo with them."
"The Times," in a leader, urges the Government to publish the facts fully, so that the nation will realise the seriousness of the situation and he aroused to make the necessary effort to meet it.—"The Times."
ITALIAN SHIPPING LOSSES . TWO LARGE STEAMERS SUNK. London, March 14. An official Italian return gives the murirjer of vessels arriving during the week as 430, and the departures 391. Two.steamers over and one under 1500 tons were sunk by submarines,'and ono was unsuccessfully attacked.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.-Reuter. [Last week, with 334 arrivals and • 285 departures, one vessel was unsuccessfully attacked, but there were no sinkings.]
