_ 9 . By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, March 14. The AV.C.T.TJ. Convention opened t-hia morning. There were SO delegates present, including two from Maori unions and thirteen from the young women's union. The corresponding secretary stated that the membership was 4834 paid up, and alfout 200 whoso fees had not been collected. The treasurer reported receipts £628 Is. 7d., and expenditure £313 15s. Id. The president, Mrs. Don, in her address, referred to the progress of temperance hy vote, and hy national compulsion as a ■war measure in Canada and the United States. She regretted the inadequate action inthis direction in Britain. Mts. Don voiced a noto of thankfulness for six o'clock closing, r.nd made refercneo to the- necessity for the abolition of the traffic, especially in the interests of returning soldiers, strained in body and mind by war. Tho general election this year, she said, should see- Nolicense carried at ihe poll.
