EASTER LEAVE FROM CAMP

LIMITATION TO FOUR DAYS,

'A request was recently mado to the Minister of Defence by the Mayor ot Auckland, Mr. J. H. Gunson, that the Easter leave to be granted to reinforcement drafts should be extended in the case of Auckland men, so that they could spend the holidays at their homes. "It would have been a great pleasure to me to comply with MrGunson's wish if it had been possible, said Sir James Allen, in_ reply, "but, under tho circumstances it cannot be arranged, owing to transport and otner reasons. Most of the men in camp have been given a considerable amount of leave already. The Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh drafts had had their final leave during the Christmas period,, and, in addition to tbo usual extended leave, many of the men received extra leave of up to a fortnight;-- We are arranging for tho men of the Thirtyeighth draft to get their final leave during the Easter period, but the Thirty-ninth draft only mobilised between March 4 and 9, and it can hardly be expected that these men should be given extra leayo so soon. The Tlrirty.sixth, Thirty-seventh, and Thirty-ninth drafts hiwo been granted,, local leave to cover tho four days of Easter." ~ The Minister added that m making these arrangements he thought ho had dealt justly by the men. If he altered the arrangements with regard to Auckland men, he would have to do tho same for men from other places, and an impossible position would be created As a matter of fact, similar applications had been received from Chrisfchurch and Nelson. '. Further, there was the question of transport. To givo general leave would mean extra trains and steamers: At Gnristmas steamers fiad to ho chartered, and it would be too much to expect the same to be done for Easter. _ The Fortieth draft would bo mobilising in the week following Easter, and transport would bo required for it. Another reason why extended leave was not desirable was that it would senously interfere with the men's training. _^______—
